Pipe Status (MOTYPE) Not Displaying Correctly

Hi All,

I recently encountered an issue with the display of my pipes in the model. As shown in the attached image, Pipe 122751 is active and has flow in it, but displays as being inactive. Doing a little bit of digging, I see that the display is based on the MOTYPE field, which is somehow not being populated correctly from InfoWater. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

As an added twist, I can display active pipes as they should be displayed by adding them to a domain, adding that domain to my active facility, and then clearing my domain.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Can you verify which software version of InfoWater you are currently running? This is found in the InfoWater menu -> Help -> About InfoWater.

Secondly can you try hitting the Reset Display button Looks like a yellow paint palette with a blue arrow above it.

I would also try clearing the domain and after resetting the display switching to a different scenario and switching back and breaking the table join and rejoining it and checking again. Table joins are often by ArcGIS methodology a static connection and the value you are seeing in the table join may not always 100% reflect the actual element status. By resetting the display and clearing the domain you should easily be able to see if the element is active or not based on the element coloring apart from the table.

If there is confusion You also want to make sure that the output you are viewing is the active output as this can lead to confusion if you accidentally show results for a different run under different circumstances. To do that check your model explorer and make sure in the box shown it is showing "*Active* Standard" and not something else. Yours looks ok, but wanted to pass that on as it can lead to confusion when switched to something else.

One last thing, If the previous suggestions do not resolve the issue there is a chance that the map file has gotten potentially corrupted in the model. A simple model rebuild procedure can be used to recreate the map file and will resolve the issues you noted. It is often a good idea to periodically (possibly every 6 months to a year or so, or simply whenever the model appears to run slower than usual) After a rebuild users often finds the model will run faster and open quicker when doing so and it can resolve issues that can occur if the map file ever get's corrupted such that it is not properly displaying elements as expected. Once rebuilt it is often also a good idea to take the opportunity to clean out unnecessary GIS background files as well. This will make it smaller which will load and save and run faster as well.

Procedure to rebuild and InfoWater Database with a brand new clean MXD file

This procedure will rebuild the IWDB folder and create a new fresh .MXD file for the model to use.. This procedure is helpful and will address any issues with the MXD file and the map folder that may have occurred.

For the instructions below,
Model1 is the original model and Model2 is the rebuilt model.

1. Open the original model mxd file. Do not initialize the mxd file.

2. Open a brand new blank ArcGIS session this will be your Model2 file. Save this new blank model mxd file to a new name (Model2).

3. Right click and copy one of the model element layers (Junction, Tank, Reservoir, Pump, Valve or Pipe) from the original model to the new model file (paste by right click on the "LAYERS" and select paste layer) or add a background layer to the new model that has the spatial projection you want the model to be in.

4. Press the red arrow to initialize Model2 and in the Create New InfoWater Project dialog box, select Same as active map.

5. In the Create New InfoWater Project dialog box, we would recommend in the Project GeoDatabase Type: File GeoDatabase.

6. Press the OK button.

7. Save Model2 and close ArcMap.

8. Copy everything
except the Map folder from Model1.IWDB folder into Model2.IWDB folder. (Important: do not copy the Map folder.)

9. Open Model2.mxd and initialize the model.

10. Go to the InfoWater dropdown menu, Utilities -> Update Map from DB -> Force Full Network to redraw the network.

11. Go to the InfoWater dropdown menu, View -> Reset Display.

12. Go to the InfoWater dropdown menu, Utilities -> Database -> Reindex.

13. Go to the InfoWater dropdown menu, Utilities -> Database -> Pack.

14. Go to the InfoWater dropdown menu, Utilities -> Database -> Clean.

15. Save the model.

16. NOTE: If your old model MXD file used bookmarks Use this procedure to copy these to your new MXD file a. In the Model1 file go to Bookmarks-> manage Bookmarks in the ArcGIS menu. Using the "save" button export all of the bookmarks to a file. Remember the location where these are saved as you will need this file shortly

b. In the model2 file go to Bookmarks-> manage Bookmarks in the ArcGIS menu. Using the "load" button, browse for the file you just saved. This will load all of the bookmarks from the Model1 file into your new Model2 mxd file.



Procedure to rebuild the model database without a new MXD -This can help when you don't want to lose notes or other hard to transfer information from the MXD file. This procedure will simply to a "save as" of your existing MXD model file as the basis of the rebuild. Fully recreating the MXD with the first procedure will also resolve any oddities or corruption that can occur within the model MXD file as well, but this process is for just rebuilding the database alone.


Procedure to rebuild and InfoWater Database
